The ACT and eastern NSW are both at risk of severe thunderstorms on Thursday afternoon and into the evening as an inland trough pushes eastwards, writes Sky News Australia meteorologist Alison Osborne.
Daily shower and storm activity for inland NSW and Victoria this week has brought the heaviest rain in two months for places like Benalla, Albury, and Euabalong – areas that do need rain at this time of year to kick off the cropping season.
The storm risk is on the rise on Thursday, with Canberra and Sydney both at risk of severe thunderstorms. Conditions are primed for lightning as an inland trough over the far west of NSW is strengthening and moving eastward, while a moisture-laden airstream off the warm Tasman Sea feeds in from the coast.
This can tilt thunderstorms, meaning the rising air that provides the storm’s energy cannot get choked off by falling rain. This makes for long lasting storms that can form rotating updrafts – and this means the triple threat of large hailstones , damaging wind gusts strong enough to bring down tree branches, and heavy downpours leading to flash flooding.
