Political Editor Andrew Clennell says Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s Royal Commission announcement last week “raised again the issues of tension between the Federal and NSW governments”. The announcement outlined future circumstances where the federal government “might intervene” in areas that are usually “state responsibility”, such as hazard reduction and allowing defence forces in “without state permission”.
He said Mr Morrison reportedly “initially questioned the funding of the $800 million to one billion clean up on a 50/50 basis because of the cost and believed the scope of the proposal was outside the Black Saturday arrangements employed in Victoria in 2009”. “NSW sources do question why the prime minister was questioning this issue given some of his comments in January about doing anything it takes to fund recovery from the crisis” he said.
