A relatively unknown Aussie chardonnay has earned global acclaim after winning over one of the world's most highly-respected wine judges, writes Sky News Australia Wine and Travel Editor Des Houghton.
Penfolds Yattarna 2021 Chardonnay has won acclaim since the Melbourne vintage launch, with one senior judge giving it a score of 100.
“This is a beautifully elegant chardonnay, with a very pale lemon colour, wonderfully refined. Pristine, exquisitely structured, impeccable balance and finesse. Notes of citrus, especially fresh lemons. A hint of wood smoke and wet stones with fine minerally backing, and gentle nuts and toast. Hints of oatmeal on the palate, and a whiff of honey.”
In his tasting notes chief winemaker Peter Gago described the complex aromatics and a grapefruit and lemon curd palate with a crème brûlée richness. Again, it is a multi-regional blend from grapes grown in the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Coonawarra and the Clare Valley. This is one of the most impressive offerings in the set. Gago describes the 707 as “levitating to another realm”.
