Majority of recent NSW COVID-19 cases infected with Omicron strain

Coronavirus hospitalisations have soared across the two most populous states but cases and deaths have started to trend down.

Chief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant said only one of the 17 people who died with COVID-19 had rolled their sleeves up for a booster shot. There are 2,776 patients in hospital for coronavirus treatment, an increase of 126 residents, and 203 in intensive care, up 12 on the previous day.

Try 14 days free now Dr Chant said test results from the past two days found 95 per cent of the positive cases were infected with the Omicron variant. She urged the NSW community to"not engage" with social media rumours and misinformation surrounding the booster shot and the first doses for young children. "Talk to your GP, your pharmacist, or go online and look at the Government websites," she said during a coronavirus press conference on Monday. "For parents, the National Centre for Immunisation Research has got a lot of information about COVID, its impact on children and also the vaccines. So please, use those trusted sources air at the moment do not engage in some of the misinformation that is just incredibly dangerous."Our thoughts are with those in hospital, and the families of people who have lost their lives.
