AFL: The League has defended the three week suspension handed down to Jeremey Finlayson, despite accusations of double standards after North Melbourne coach Alastair Clarkson was only handed a fine.
The next AFL player to make a homophobic slur will reportedly face a ban double the length of Jeremy Finlayson’s after a “ landmark penalty .”It led to frustration from the AFL Players Association for “ double standards ” given North Melbourne coach Alastair Clarkson escaped with a $20,000 fine and suspended two-match ban for a homophobic slur directed at St Kilda players earlier this year.
“The dominating right now is: ‘How did Clarkson not get suspended and Finlayson got three weeks?’ The accusation is double standards. “The natural course of things is one escalates to the next to the next to the next. And the code is duty bound to go; ‘If this is becoming any sort of trend, no’. And so there’s punishment and deterrent in that,” Whateley said.
