“There are a lot of very cool artistic moments. Kids will surprise you, with what they can actually do.”

On Tuesday morning, campers aged eleven to 13 were hard at work painting flat sheets of wood with their own designs — everything from elephants and bumblebees to dancing eggs and abstract scenes — which they will later turn into puzzles.Photo by Michelle BergFirst-time camper Delilah Pizzey, who decided to paint a “majestic landscape” puzzle, was excited about all the creative skills she was learning at camp.

“I have learned how to tie-dye, and we have had lots of fun,” she said. “And I’m really excited to learn how to do the screenprinting on shirts with a machine. They said they’re going to teach us about it, and we made our own pictures to put on them. I love doing art, so this is really the camp for me.”

Josh Wheeler has been the summer camp leader at Makerspace for the past two years. He says kids are hungry for the chance to learn these types of hands-on skills, especially when they may not have as many opportunities to do that now as they might have in the past. “Schools are cutting back on their arts and workshop education programs,” said Wheeler. “Some of the schools, they actually aren’t offering that stuff anymore. So I think kids are looking for ways to get creative and get messy and get into it with their own hands.”There was an error, please provide a valid email address.By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc.
