Trust the process: Institute of Process Engineering scientists are working toward a greener planet.

Scientists at the Institute of Process Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences, seek novel solutions from the lab to the marketplace.

“IPE, formerly known as the Institute of Chemical Metallurgy, was established in 1958 to use chemical engineering theories to strengthen metallurgical processes,” says Suojiang Zhang, director of IPE. “Over the decades, IPE has expanded applications of chemical engineering theory into broader areas, including resources, biochemistry, environment, energy, and material manufacturing.” Mesoscience—looking for common principles that drive complex processes—makes up the foundation of work at IPE.

IPE scientists also reduce carbon dioxide in iron-making processes. For example, they work on intensifying the fluidization that converts iron ore particles to metallic iron particles by using a high-efficient-efficient fluidized bed direct reduction process. This process, Zhu says, “could reduce the cost and facilitate the application of low carbon–iron making processes.”
