Ricardo's mum says the specialised autism program he was enrolled in was 'some of the only interaction he got with other children'. Now, with that program closed down, she and other parents are at a loss as to what to do.
A childcare centre in Tasmania's north-west has abruptly cancelled its autism specific childcare program due to low enrolments of children with ASD, and an ever-growing waitlist.
"It made me feel really upset not just for Ricardo, but for all the other families," Ms McDermott said.Louise described the program as an opportunity for her son to play in a "safe environment set up to look after children like Ric". Under this integrated model, children like Ricardo had access to a psychologist, a speech language pathologist, a key worker, nutrition supports and occupational therapists.Harry had to ask his parents to stop hugging him
"We can have 10 children a day in that room, five days a week. That's 50 places that we could do," Mr Clark said. "When I got the phone call, I rang every single speech pathologist, occupational therapist and disability support service and there are massive waitlists whether you go public, private or NDIS funded. In the wake of the DCCC's decision, Laiken had to quickly transition into the centre's mainstream childcare program.
"Obviously, as an organisation we are disappointed with the closure of the Bee Me program but fully understand and accept the position of Malangenna," Mr Thomas said.Since Ms McDermott or Ms Riley were initially notified about the closure of Bee Me, neither women have heard from Malangenna Children's Centre or St Giles.
