Nagaenthran K. Dharmalingam has been hanged for a drug offence despite calls to halt the execution due to his intellectual disability and mental health.A Malaysian man has been executed in Singapore on Wednesday after his mother's last-ditch appeal to spare his life was dismissed.Nagaenthran K. Dharmalingam was arrested in 2009 for trafficking 43 grams of heroin into Singapore and was placed on death row for more than a decade.
Nagaenthran spent more than a decade mounting legal challenges, but they were dismissed by Singapore's courts, and the city-state's president rejected appeals for clemency. Authorities have defended his conviction, saying legal rulings found he knew what he was doing at the time of the offence. After exhausting the usual appeals process, presidential clemency was the only avenue remaining to halt the execution.
