The notorious live-action musical Mamma Mia! came out in 2008 and has since become an incredibly successful franchise despite terrible reviews.
The highly popular ABBA live-action musical Mamma Mia! has turned fifteen years old. The memorable movie was able to beat out a slew of terrible reviews upon its release to emerge as a beloved $1 billion franchise, defying all critical odds and even audience expectations. Mamma Mia! originally premiered on July 18, 2008 and produced a follow-up sequel in 2018 appropriately titled Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.
The sequel to Mamma Mia! achieved more critical success than the original movie in part to the evolution of cultural perceptions as well as the significance of the film successfully capturing the original essence of the first some ten years later. Fans of the original Mamma Mia! were not disappointed by the feel-good sequel, which allowed for the franchise to continue in a positive light when it could have easily gone terribly wrong.
Some films, particularly musicals, actually benefit from having a story that doesn't distract or weigh down the true spectacle of the movie, which is singing and dancing. The movies are not popular because they are advertising themselves as considerations for the Academy Awards or presenting themselves as thoughtful representations of reality. Both Mamma Mia! and its sequel have become so popular for the exact opposite reason why many films become successful or popular.
