The emergency services were called to the terraced home in Heaton Norris on Saturday morning - the man was found dead in a downstairs room
Three fire engines, paramedics and police were dispatched to the property just before 7.30am. A number of residents in adjacent properties were evacuated while firefighters tackled the blaze.
A spokeswoman for Greater Manchester Police later confirmed an 'elderly male' had died in the fire. This morning police forensic experts were at the scene as an investigation into the death was launched.A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: "Shortly before 7.30am this morning three fire engines from Whitehill, Stockport and Offerton fire stations were called to attend a house fire on Churchill Street, Heaton Norris.
"Crews arrived quickly, evacuated adjacent properties and extinguished the fire using four breathing apparatus, two hose reels and positive pressure ventilation. "Firefighters are working alongside colleagues from Greater Manchester Police and North West Ambulance Service and remain at the scene at this time."
