An 88-year-old man who is charged with murdering an elderly woman at a retirement village in Melbourne's east has told a magistrate he did not understand the court proceedings.The court did not hear any details about the pair's relationship
The operator of the retirement home where the alleged murder happened said it would fully cooperate with police Ronald George Sparkes faced the Melbourne Magistrates' Court for a brief hearing charged with murdering Margaret Sparkes, 87, at the facility on Mount View Road in The Basin yesterday.The court did not hear any details about the pair's relationship or about the nature of the killing.
At the end of the hearing, magistrate Angela Bolger asked Mr Sparkes if he understood what had happened in court.Ms Bolger went on to inform Mr Sparkes he had been charged with murder and that no application for bail had been made on his behalf. His lawyer told the court it was his first time in custody and he would need to be seen by a medical practitioner.
