A man jailed after being charged in the shooting of a Double Springs police officer earlier this week has died. Jeffrey Lee Adair, 48, died Friday morning at the Winston County Jail, the coroner’s office confirmed. Authorities have not said how Adair died.

Officers made contact with the driver –Adair – near County Road 55. At that point, the chief said, Adair made a U-turn and fled from the officers. They ended up back on Highway 278 at which point a deputy tried to cut off Adair and Adair struck a sheriff’s patrol vehicle, Miller said. Officers gave verbal commands for him to roll down the windows. “He opened fire on them,’’ Miller said.
