The mother of Aussie tennis champion NickKyrgios was left terrified after she was carjacked at gunpoint in Canberra, the thief stole her son's Tesla. But in a fighting twist, Kyrgios then used the car's technology to stop the offender in his tracks.
Police on Monday arrested a 32-year-old man after receiving a report that a man threatened a woman at a residence in Watson.Watch the latest sport on Channel 7 or stream for free onKyrgios was able to help police track the location of the green Tesla, which ultimately led to the arrest.
“About 8.30am, police received a report that a man wearing dark clothing and with his face covered had threatened a woman at the residence with a firearm, demanding the keys to a Tesla parked at the residence,” police said. “The victim was able to provide location updates for the car, and an initial attempt to intercept the vehicle in Downer was unsuccessful. Police then engaged in a short pursuit, which was abandoned due to safety concerns for other road users.“Officers from ACT Policing Criminal Investigations, Operation TORIC, City Station, Gungahlin Station, Family Violence, and AFP Specialist Response established a cordon in Ainslie, where the man was arrested, and the vehicle recovered about 9.05am.
The man fronted ACT Magistrates Court on Tuesday charged with aggravated robbery, driving a stolen motor vehicle, furious driving, and failure to stop for police.
