A man and his three grandchildren have died in a light plane crash shortly after take-off from Canberra Airport.
New South Wales Police and the state's Rural Fire Service were called to a property on Hadlow Drive in the small town of Gundaroo just before 3.00 pm on Friday after reports that an aircraft had crashed and caught alight. The Rural Fire Service extinguished the blaze, but the Cirrus SR22 aircraft was completely destroyed.
It's understood the 65-year-old grandfather from Queensland was an experienced pilot and had been flying to Armidale. His grandchildren - an 11-year-old boy, a 9-year-old girl, and a 6-year-old girl - are believed to be from New South Wales.
