The FBI has opened a federal hate crime investigation into last week's shooting at a hair salon in Dallas' Koreatown area that injured three people.

Authorities do not yet know why the man shot the three female victims Wednesday afternoon at Hair World Salon, which is in a shopping center with many businesses owned by Korean Americans.
Jeremy Theron Smith, 37, faces three charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, according to jail records. The FBI said Tuesday that it has opened a federal hate crime investigation along with federal prosecutors in Texas and the U.S. Department of Justice’s civil rights division. Police chief Eddie Garcia is expected to release additional information about the arrest later Tuesday.
Smith, who is Black, is jailed and no bond has been set. Jail records do not list an attorney for him. According to affidavit obtained by The Dallas Morning News, Smith's girlfriend told authorities that whenever Smith is around an Asian American, “he begins having delusions that the Asian mob is after him or attempting to harm him.”The newspaper reports that she told detectives he had been having delusions about Asian Americans ever since being involved in a car crash about two years ago with a man of Asian descent.
