A 33-year-old man has been arrested and charged with attempting to set fire to the Newtown Synagogue in Sydney following an investigation by Strike Force Pearl, a task force dedicated to combating anti-Semitic incidents.
A 33-year-old man from Camperdown has been charged in connection with an alleged attempt to set fire to the Newtown Synagogue in Sydney 's inner west earlier this month. Police arrested the man following the execution of search warrants at two addresses on Pyrmont Bridge Road. During the searches, officers seized a number of items that are currently being examined.
This arrest marks the ninth individual charged under Strike Force Pearl, a task force established in December to investigate a series of anti-Semitic incidents reported in Sydney in recent months.The alleged attack on the Newtown Synagogue on Georgina Street involved the use of a 'clear liquid' to ignite a fire, which thankfully extinguished itself. The incident was widely condemned, with several red swastikas also found graffitied along the synagogue's front fence. Police Commissioner Karen Webb stated that officers were initially looking for two individuals in connection with the alleged attack. NSW Premier Chris Minns characterized the alleged use of accelerant at the synagogue as an 'escalation in anti-Semitic crime' in the state.The arrested man was taken to Surry Hills Police Station and charged with destroy property in company use fire, destroy/damage property in company, goods in personal custody suspected being stolen, and cultivate prohibited plant.
