A 33-year-old Victorian man has been charged with sending antisemitic death threats to a federal MP and a state MP. The man allegedly used social media and emails to contact the MPs and made threats against them.
A federal Member of Parliament (MP) has reportedly received antisemitic death threats from a 33-year-old man residing in Reservoir, Victoria. The man was charged on Thursday with four counts of using a carriage service to menace, harass, or cause offense, and one count of using a carriage service to threaten to kill.
Authorities allege that the man utilized social media and email to contact the NSW-based federal MP on multiple occasions between January 16th and January 18th of this year, making death threats and spewing antisemitic remarks. Victoria Police also claim that the man used social media to contact a Victorian state MP last month, sending threatening messages.Assistant Commissioner Stephen Nutt, leading the AFP's counterterrorism and special investigations command, stated that the police are diligently investigating antisemitic conduct under the Special Operation Avalite. He emphasized that parliamentarians and community members should not be subjected to vile threats based on their race, religion, or ethnicity. He further indicated that the community could expect more charges, as Special Operation Avalite has several individuals under investigation. This week, the federal parliament was largely consumed by discussions on how the Albanese government was tackling the escalating issue of antisemitism. The Labor party introduced mandatory jail sentences for terror and Nazi-related offenses, defying their own policy platform that generally opposes mandatory sentences. A separate incident last month revealed the discovery of a caravan in Dural, a northern Sydney suburb. This caravan contained a note with the address of a Sydney synagogue and a sufficient quantity of stolen explosives to create a 40-meter blast wave. This discovery sent shockwaves through the country, as it was believed that Prime Minister Anthony Albanese learned about the caravan simultaneously with the public. Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has written to Albanese requesting an independent inquiry into the communication channels between security agencies, police, and the government concerning the caravan discovery
