Manchester City are closing the gap on Manchester United in terms of social following as they prepare for one of the most-watched games of the season
Manchester City had a lot of catching up to do when they set their eyes on conquering world football after the 2008 takeover.
What is notable about City's surge is that the bigger leaps are coming on the newer platforms that are more popular with young people; their Instagram has shot up from 40m to 51m and TikTok has leapt up from 18m to 23m to sit just behind United. The Blues are absolutely killing the competition on WhatsApp too, with their channel starting last September up to 27m followers - eight million more than any other Premier League club.
There is a weekly plan covering all platforms and monthly and annual reviews to check on what works and what doesn't, including speaking regularly with social media platforms and having specialists on their own teams. While follower count isn't the metric that matters most inside the club, their work is seeing visible results that has seen City surge ahead of Liverpool and closer to United.
