Man dead, woman injured in Escondido house fire [Breaking]

A man was killed and a woman was injured Tuesday evening in a house fire in Escondido, officials said.

The blaze was reported about 5:10 p.m. at the single-story home on West 11th Avenue near South Orange Street, Escondido Fire Department spokesperson Jeff Murdock said. Firefighters arrived within a few minutes to find the home fully ablaze with flames coming out of windows, Murdock said. Neighbors told the fire crews there were possibly two people trapped inside.

Firefighters went into the home, found a man and woman and pulled them outside, Murdock said. Both had suffered severe burns and smoke-inhalation injuries. Paramedics took them to Palomar Medical Center, where the man died, Murdock said. The woman was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries. It took fire crews about 30 minutes to knock down the flames, though they were still overhauling the structure as of 7:30 p.m., Murdock said. The home was thought to be a total loss.Authorities shut down South Orange Street between West Ninth Avenue and West 13th Avenue. That road closure remained in place as of 7:30 p.m.
