A dog walker who stumbled across a placenta by a muddy Sydney riverbank, triggering a desperate search for a baby and its mother, says there was no doubt about what he had found. A human placenta and an umbilical cord were discovered on the edge of the Cooks River near Wardell Rd in Earlwood about 4.30pm on Monday. Tony Robson and his wife came across the organ “sitting on top of the mud” during low tide as they enjoyed their regular afternoon walk with their two dogs.

The placenta and umbilical have been sent for priority testing and a blood detection dog is also searching the area, NSW Police Detective Chief Superintendent Christine McDonald said. “We have police divers currently searching the mangroves and the water’s edge of Cook’s River,” McDonald said of the new site identified about 10am on Tuesday.
