Man dies after shark attack at Great Barrier Reef
A young man has died after he was attacked by a shark while swimming in the southern Great Barrier Reef on Monday.
The 23-year-old sustained severe injuries to his leg, hand and elbow during the attack near North West Island, about 75 kilometres north-east of Gladstone on the central Queensland coast. North West Island offers opportunities for bushwalking, nature study, reef walking, diving and snorkellingPolice said the man was swimming with a group of friends and as he was swimming back to their charter vessel, he was bitten by a shark.
A doctor and paramedics responded and treated the man on board the vessel before he was flown to to Gladstone Hospital by a rescue helicopter with a critical care paramedic aboard.A report will be prepared for the coroner.
