Riot police have stormed a detention centre in Western Australia after a man died in a suspected stabbing. 7NEWS

7NEWS understands the 32-year-old victim was stabbed by another detainee, sparking a riot during which it is understood a fire broke out.Homicide squad detectives are investigating the man’s death and two people are assisting with inquiries.

The Refugee Action Coalition said the man was fatally stabbed during an altercation with another detainee in the compound. The Coalition claimed it had taken about an hour for an ambulance to arrive.A heavy police presence at the facility on Wednesday night.The Coalition said the man, from Turkey, had been held in the centre for about three years and had signed an agreement to return to Turkey about a year ago.

There have been several incidents at Yongah Hill detention centre near Perth, including a major riot in 2018.Australian Border Force confirmed the man’s death and said the matter would be subject to an ongoing investigation. “We express our condolences to the man’s family and friends. The ABF’s priority is the health and safety of all detainees and staff,” it said.

The detention facility has been the centre of controversy over the years, with a massive riot and fire breaking out in the compound in 2018 and more recently an escape tunnel being uncovered.
