A man has died after attempting to remove a snake that had coiled around his friend's leg in a tragic accident during school celebrations in northern Queensland.

It is not known what type of snake was involved in the incident, but Ms Bertenshaw said the man's symptom's suggest it was a highly venomous eastern brown snake. "I imagine the circumstances last night, it might have been dark. It's no one's fault. It's just a tragic event that has happened," she said.
