A man has died in a maximum security prison days after driving his car at police officers, narrowly missing them, before crashing into a police station in Western New South Wales.

The 67-year-old was denied bail after the incident at Mudgee Police Station last Friday, where police say he narrowly missed officers and a civilian. The ABC understands the 67-year-old was then taken into custody at Bathurst Correction Facility as a remand inmate staying in the maximum security part of the prison. CSNSW and NSW Police are investigating the incident.
"Any death in custody is immediately reported to the NSW coroner and subject to a compulsory, rigorous public inquiry," a CSNSW spokesperson said. Police said that around 1:30 on Friday afternoon, Mr Hobbs drove his car at officers who were patrolling near the police station. A short time later, he then drove at another officer as he was leaving the station before crashing into the building.
Commander of Orana Mid-Western Police District Superintendent Tim Chinn said the ute "narrowly missed" several police officers and a civilian. During a court appearance on Friday, Acting Judge Howard Bell refused bail, claiming Mr Hobbs posed an "unacceptable risk".
