A 38-year-old man from Brighton drowned while rescuing a group of children from strong currents at Carlton Beach in Southern Tasmania. Emergency services responded to reports of swimmers in distress and performed CPR on the man, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. The other swimmers did not require medical attention.

Picture: ABCThe other swimmers didn’t require medical treatment.“I understand that he was actually conscious when he was put in the boat, but unfortunately, then became unconscious and CPR commenced at that point,” Mr Latham said while addressing the media on Sunday.
“But given it’s very early in the investigation, we need to determine where the children were at the time and how they got themselves in trouble,” Mr Latham said. “Suffice to say, they found themselves in trouble, that then triggered this man to go and attempt a rescue.”
