Toby Loughnane, 41, from Brighton, faced a short hearing in the Melbourne Magistrates Court, charged with murder.
Maryam Hamka was reported missing five days after she was last seen.
The court heard Mr Loughnane is charged with separate family violence offences against Ms Hamka, which his lawyer, Sam Norton, described as "serious allegations of violence".Mr Norton applied for those charges to be suppressed, but the request was denied.
