Judge says obscene and offensive comments made by Wai Foo Sing, 69, went beyond the protection of free speech. FMTNews
KUALA LUMPUR: A 69-year-old man was fined RM15,000 today, or six months’ jail in default, for posting on Facebook an obscene graphic caricature depicting Prophet Muhammad and his wife Aisyah.
Sessions Court judge M.M Edwin Paramjothy imposed the fine after Wai Foo Sing changed his plea and admitted making the posting on Feb 17 last year. “The accused’s obscene and offensive comments accompanied the relevant posting,” the judge said. “It is undeniable that the accused’s inappropriate, offensive and obscene posting based on religion had transgressed the parameters of free speech guaranteed under our constitution.”
He added: “The crime of insulting one’s religion is committed not only against the followers of the particular religion but also against the values and functions that the particular religion represents.”Deputy public prosecutor Annur Atiqah Abdul Hadi prosecuted, while Wai was represented by counsel Gabriel Susayan.
