David Vickers, a former party-goer who lost his voice to throat cancer, was found dead in his flat in Preston. An inquest heard that he had overdosed on prescription painkillers and his level of loneliness may have contributed.
But when he was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2013 doctors had to remove a huge section of his larynx in order to save his life. After his operation David turned his back on his partying and managed to cut out the drugs and alcohol which had once been a key part of his life and helped him to make friends.
On the morning of April 19 care assistant Yvette Donn let herself into David's supported-living flat in Cromwell Street and called out her usual greeting "Good morning David". But there was no answer. "I called the office and they told me to hang up and ring 999," Yvette said in a statement. "The 999 call-handler told me to put him on the floor but I explained he was too heavy for that and I was concerned he would bang his head so they told me to get help.
The combination of tramadol, diazepam and pregabalin would have enhanced the toxic and sedative effects of the painkillers. "Losing his voice affected his confidence in how he could communicate with people as he used to be the life and soul of the party."
