Boden’s mother, who spoke with media at a news conference organized by the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations, said the officers under investigation shouldn’t be allowed to keep working. Reporters were told SIRT had identified nine involved officers who were placed on a one-week leave of absence, which has ended.“I think it should begin by taking their badges from them,” Umpherville said, adding she doesn’t think the officers should be working with the public.
Umpherville’s older brother, Darry Umpherville, said Prince Albert’s police officers should have to wear body cameras. His brother was Tased and beaten, sustained broken orbital bones and head cuts, he said. “He lived for his family,” said Chase Sinclair, who was “adopted” into the family and considered Boden a brother. What happened was uncalled for and unjust, he said.
The release said SIRT investigators recovered a loaded handgun at the scene; the province later confirmed the firearm doesn’t belong to police and wasn’t an “issued firearm.”
