A man with cerebral palsy was asked to leave a Sydney pub's dancefloor because he was using a wheelchair, despite being able to walk up the stairs with assistance. The security guard cited safety concerns and venue policy, but the man argued he had been on dancefloors before without incident. The situation highlights the societal limitations people with disabilities often face.

While dancing with friends at a Sydney pub on a Friday night, a man who has cerebral palsy was told to get off the dancefloor because he was using a wheelchair.

Mr Tun told the security guard that he had been on dancefloors before and that he would accept the risk.Mr Tun said the security guard told him it went against the venue's policy."I walked up the stairs, that should be a testament to how capable I am."They said no, but did not tell him wheelchairs were not allowed on the upper level.

"People who don't have the education equate it to something else, what they know … I guess that's how society limits people with disability."He said that, after about 10 minutes of talking with the security guard, Mr Tun's friend interjected and reiterated it was safe for him to be on the dancefloor.

In a statement to the ABC, 3 Wise Monkeys licensee Zac Doyle said management was investigating what happened to Mr Tun. "Instead, they find that there's often these blanket exclusions that leave them unable to do things like entertainment or leisure activities that are actually a really important part of participating in society and living an ordinary life," he said.

If a person feels they have been discriminated against due to their disability they can make a complaint to the Australia Human Rights Commission, Mr Skipsey said.
