A man has been jailed for six-and-a-half years after he crashed into two parked police cars in Sydney's north-west, leading to the discovery of hundreds of kilograms of crystal methamphetamine in the back of his van.

Simon Tu, 28, was behind the wheel of a Toyota HiAce on the morning of July 22, 2019 when he drifted to the wrong side of the road and crashed into two cars parked outside Eastwood Police Station. He did not stop to provide his details and police went looking for him, finding him an hour later in the nearby suburb of Ryde.Advertisement

When police searched the back of the van, they found multiple cardboard boxes packed with crystal methamphetamine, also known as ice. In total, Mr Tu was transporting 260.47 kilograms of the substance. He pleaded guilty to supplying a large commercial quantity of a prohibited drug.He was also convicted on two lesser charges of negligent driving and failing to give particulars to police.

"Whoever gave him the drugs wouldn’t be allowing him to have them the day before, the week before, anything like that," Judge Hock said. The court heard he was gambling and using cocaine prior to the incident and owed money "commercially as well as personally". On the morning he was arrested, an officer asked Tu: "What's the go? You owe people money, or just wanted to make some quick cash?"Tu, who has been in custody since his arrest, will be eligible for parole in July 2023.Our weekly newsletter will deliver expert analysis of the race to the White House from our US correspondent Matthew Knott.
