The former Canberra man who pleaded guilty to the elaborate, years-long fraud asked to be imprisoned because he had nowhere to stay.
A man who carried out an elaborate fraud, which included pretending to be a female spy, is behind bars after he asked the ACT Supreme Court to send him to jail. The victim paid $718,000 over two years, which Deakin used to fund his ice and gambling addictionsJeremiah Deakin, 32, extracted $718,000 from a man he had met online for sexual services.
He will be sentenced next week after pleading guilty, but as had nowhere to stay in Canberra he asked to be sent to prison today. The court heard that after meeting the man online, Deakin lied to him by saying the man was implicated in Centrelink charges.Deakin convinced the man that an agreement had been reached with a magistrate, who required the man to pay a long list of expenses or be legally liableOther lies included that there were charges relating to the pair's sexual relationship.
Over two years of fraud, the victim received messages about Deakin's case from a woman who first said she was an ASIO lawyer and, later, a police officer.Offender blames his addictions and difficult upbringing"I just couldn't stop," he said. The court heard Deakin spent about $2,000 a week on drugs and about $5,000 on poker machines.Deakin told the court he had still been at school when he first met the man, who paid him for sex.
The man gave Deakin money over years, which he used to pay for everything from rent to school costs and medical expenses. But when his victim finally said he could no longer continue sending him money, Deakin became angry.Deakin cited his difficult upbringing, saying his mother had abandoned him when he two years old, and his father had thrown him out when he was about 15, after he asked him to choose between him or his stepmother.
