“The investigation, from start to finish, has unearthed a series of despicable offences – all with the common aim of exploiting vulnerable young women for selfish financial gain.'
A 59-year old man who preyed on "vulnerable" young women was jailed on Wednesday for multiple offences including human trafficking and controlling prostitution.
Instead, Heaney embarked on sexual relationships with the women then instructed them to sleep with other men for his financial gain. On numerous occasions, Heaney drove the women across the border and arranged for them to engage in sexual encounters with multiple partners - again for Heaney's financial gain - in both Dundalk and Dublin.
The Judge also noted the impact Heaney's criminality has had on all 12 victims. He read the statement of one woman, who said she met Heaney in 2012 when she approached him for a job as a stripper. "I had a difficult upbringing and was vulnerable at the time I met Martin Heaney. He knew that and when I look back at it Martin Heaney groomed me and encouraged me and influenced me to do things that were never on my radar."The terms of the order include banning Heaney from working or advertising in the sex trade, entering into any relationships without giving notice of his background, and owning more than two mobile phones.
“In this case, five other individuals received cautions for buying sexual services, which is illegal in Northern Ireland. For most people, selling sexual services is not truly a free choice. Even when they escape their situation, many are left traumatised and with feelings of guilt and shame. Anyone paying for sexual services should know that they are contributing to the exploitation of another human being and, in many cases, the profits of human traffickers.
