A court has heard chilling details of how a man murdered his ex-girlfriend, Maryam Hamka, in 2021. The judge described the killer, Luke Loughnane, as manipulative and violent. Loughnane had previously threatened to make Hamka scream in agony. He was found guilty of murder and sentenced to 30 years in prison.
“In one you said you would make her scream in agony,” Beale said on Friday.Outside court, Hamka’s family said they were pleased with the sentence, but know justice being served would never bring their loved one back.“We’re happy with the outcome,” brother Hassan Hamka said.Beale said Loughnane and Maryam Hamka had been in a relationship in 2020 which was marred by Loughnane’s drug use and violence.
During that night, Hamka was told by a friend to get a taxi and leave the property as Loughnane began taking demeaning videos of her. Loughnane later used Newman’s car to dispose of Hamka’s body and to drive to a supermarket to buy cleaning products. Loughnane attended school at Xavier College before being expelled and completing his VCE at Caulfield Grammar, the court heard.
