The court heard he then walked out of the house holding his head in his hands swearing and yelling so loudly the neighbours could hear.In sentencing Gilliland, Justice Graeme Crow said the crime was a "vicious, ferocious and prolonged attack" that was "unimaginable and particularly cruel to the children".
Crown Prosecutor Josh Philips told the court it "irretrievably stained the lives of others", including those of Ms Gilliland's brother, mother and stepfather who have uprooted their entire lives to take care of the children.Karen Gilliland's mother Cheryl O'Sullivan and her husband Neville O'Sullivan leave the court.
Mr Cranston told the court that Gilliland had always hated him and his parents, and how the murder had "utterly destroyed" their lives.Neither called Gilliland by name – referring only to "him".
