A driver has had a lucky escape after their ute stopped in the middle of a railway track in Tasmania, right in the path of an oncoming train. The Toyota Hilux ute stopped on the tracks on Stony Rise Rd, Devonport just before 6am on Wednesday. The driver managed to jump out of the vehicle just before it was hit by a train, and pushed along the tracks. No serious injuries were reported. Inspector Shane Le Fevre said it appeared as though the driver had been “inattentive” and missed road markings.

He said the dramatic incident had had a “pretty significant” impact on the driver and train staff. Police will be providing recommendations about the safety of the railway intersection following previous similar incidents. Le Fevre said some of the line markings on the road had faded and were difficult to see, especially at night. “The message is to the motoring public, in winter, please take particular care of the road markings when it’s dark and wet,” he said.
