A man has died after a tree fell on his car during severe storms that are battering parts of New South Wales . Wind gusts exceeding 110kph have impacted southern NSW, leaving thousands without power across the state and the ACT. Heavy rain, flash flooding , hail, and damaging winds are anticipated to persist through Thursday.
The Bureau of Meteorology has issued warnings of very dangerous thunderstorms that will likely produce damaging, locally destructive winds, large hailstones, and heavy rainfall, potentially leading to flash flooding over the next several hours. Much of south-eastern NSW is expected to be affected, including the Illawarra, South Coast, Metropolitan, Hunter, Central Tablelands, and Southern Tablelands districts. Canberra experienced a peak hour storm with hail and rain, resulting in over 350 households losing power, with parts of the city's north hit hardest.Severe thunderstorms are also predicted across parts of the Northern Rivers, Mid North Coast, Snowy Mountains, South West Slopes, North West Slopes and Plains, Central West Slopes and Plains, Northern Tablelands, and Upper Western forecast districts. Wind gusts reached 106kph at Wagga Wagga shortly after 2 pm today, and 113kph at Cabrumurra just before 3:30 pm. Essential Energy reported 'significant damage' to the electricity network in a text message to affected customers. Thousands are also without power west of Batemans Bay, around Coonabarabran and Gulgong, while hundreds have been affected outside of Yass, around Cowra, and near Walgett. Ambulance NSW acting Riverina duty operations manager Amy Barclay said paramedics responded to a call in the Wagga Wagga suburb of Bomen where four people were trapped in a demountable building after it flipped in strong wind gusts. All four patients sustained relatively minor injuries, including bruises, lacerations, and sore limbs. The State Emergency Service (SES) reported responding to over 130 incidents across the state, primarily involving trees falling on cars and demountable buildings being moved by the wind. Mr. Hargrave emphasized that even though the worst of the storm had passed, caution was still necessary. He urged the public to stay put if trapped, make phone calls, and prepare their properties by tying down loose items and cleaning gutters before any future storms. Wagga Wagga local Stephanie Day recounted the damage the wind caused to her mother's garden, including the loss of her chook house and bird aviary. Thankfully, no animals were in the structures at the time. Heavy rain, flash flooding, hail, and damaging winds are expected to continue through Thursday across much of the state
