Peter William Smith, 57, removed a silky bantam chicken called Betty White from an enclosure at the Oakvale Wildlife Park in Salt Ash on January 2.Smith was charged with committing an act of aggravated animal cruelty which carries a maximum jail term of two years.Smith's defence lawyer, Bryan Wrench, attempted to downplay the act saying his client had grown up in the country and was less sensitive."750 million chickens are killed a year.
"There's children that come home, especially special needs children, a chook sitting on their lap gives them so much joy."The CEO of the Oakvale Wildlife Park, Leanne Sansom, said Betty White was part of a threatened species breeding program.
