This was the question on the mind of Marshall Herr* as he pedalled like a madman from the Glen Eden train station inWhen he saw the same bike pop up on Trade Me the following day, he became suspicious.Through some amateur detective work, a fake identity, and a daring heist, Marshall Herr was able to retrieve his stolen bike.
So he did some digging on the Trade Me profile that listed the bike and found its positive rating had been artificially boosted by hundreds of reviews from one person posting, "Great trader" over and over again.An officer added the information to the case file attached to his stolen bike and said they would look into it.
The bike had a unique bright red bell, two custom-fitted head and rear lights, and there was also a series of deep scratches on the front of the frame."I was contemplating riding away, but I thought if I did that he would come after me in his car. So I went around the car park trying to think of a plan. There was a lot of heavy breathing going on and not just because I am unfit," Mr Herr said.
"She told the person on the phone that she would have to call them back. She looked really surprised, and her eyes went quite big and her jaw dropped. My adrenaline was high, and she was a bit shocked, but we were also laughing," Mr Herr said.They took the re-stolen bike to the police station where police officers matched it against his description of the bike.
