A 47-year-old man shot two dogs and tried to shoot a woman Wednesday afternoon inside a Chambersburg apartment, prompting local and state police to respond to the scene, authorities said.
Clifton N. Gatling, of Chambersburg, started shooting around 5:18 p.m. in a first-floor apartment on the first block of North Fourth Street, Chambersburg police said. The woman was able to escape the apartment without injury, police said. Both dogs were shot, but it’s unclear whether they survived.for hours Wednesday. The Pennsylvania State Police’s Special Emergency Response Team went to the scene, and police said an arrest warrant was obtained while officers secured the area.The state police’s SERT team went into the apartment around 9:22 p.m. and arrested Gatling without incident, Chambersburg police said.
Gatling is charged with attempted homicide, aggravated assault, animal cruelty and several related offenses. show Gatling was denied bail to protect the “victim and the community.” He is being held in the Franklin County Jail, and has a preliminary hearing scheduled for Sept. 6 in front of Magisterial District Judge Kristin D.
