Man struck by car, killed while changing tire along freeway in Chula Vista [Breaking]
A man was hit by a car and killed while changing a tire on the side of a highway in Chula Vista Thursday evening, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash happened shortly about 5:50 p.m., according to the CHP. The driver of a disabled blue Toyota Scion had parked in the center median and was working on the vehicle along state Route 54 east of Highland Avenue. He was taken to a local hospital, where he died. A witness told OnSceneTV that he saw a Mazda pass his car at a high rate of speed before the Mazda hit the man changing the tire.
The Mazda was badly damaged, and the driver stopped nearby and cooperated with investigators. Alcohol or drugs were not believed to be a factor in the incident. Three eastbound lanes were closed for at least two hours after the incident. The cause of the collision and sequence of events remain under investigation, the CHP said.
The name of the deceased was withheld pending notification of next of kin. No further information was immediately available.
