A man is fighting for life following a horrific crash in Melbourne’s west. The driver was travelling on Dohertys Rd, Truganina about 4am on Sunday when he flew over a roundabout and hit a tree. The impact of the crash was so strong the car split in half and landed on the side of the road, with debris from the wreckage stretching for more than 100m. Witnesses stepped in to help the driver, a man in his 20s, who was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
“The driver was still in the car at the time, two witnesses have pulled up and started assisting there and then the ambulance came,” he said. “I’ve been to a lot of fatals and I’m surprised that ... he was actually taken to hospital.” Police measured tire marks on Sunday to try to figure out exactly how fast the car was going. The driver underwent surgery for significant head and leg injuries, and remains in hospital in a critical condition.
