It's understood the man in his 20s was attacked by a shark at North Shore Beach at Port Macquarie.
The 23-year-oldidentified as Kai McKenzie, suffered serious injuries to his right leg during the attack at North Shore Beach at Port Macquarie about 11am.
An off-duty police officer walking his dog nearby rushed over to McKenzie, using his dog's leash as a makeshift tourniquet to stop the bleeding on the surfer's leg.The 23-year-old, identified as Kai McKenzie, suffered serious injuries to his right leg. He was then treated by paramedics and flown to John Hunter Hospital for treatment.
A three-metre-long great white shark was confirmed to have bitten the surfer, the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development said this afternoon. Over the past week, 15 white sharks have been detected in Port Macquarie on the tagged shark listening system, DPIRD also said. "Following the incident, the government's shark team have set an additional two SMART drumlines in addition to the four that were set, as normal, this morning," a spokesperson for the department said.The beach has been closed following the incident.
