Man Utd were beaten 3-1 by Brighton at Old Trafford and their difficult start to the season continued, with fans booing during the game and at full-time.
Boos at Old Trafford were the soundtrack to the 2021/22 season when everything that could go wrong did for Manchester United, but the jeers were back on Saturday and this campaign is threatening to spiral similarly out of control.
The boos were very loud, however, and the standing ovation for Hojlund as he reached the touchline also felt like another critique of Ten Hag's call. He had six of the eight shots United had in the first half but hit the target just once. Some of his efforts were close, one was blocked when it looked to be going in, another was deflected onto the woodwork, but there were also at least a couple of occasions when he pulled the trigger with teammates in a better position for the pass.
Rashford's passing was a little loose in the second half and his body language betrayed frustration. He gave Brighton a counter-attacking opportunity with one wayward pass and just stood there, rather than chasing back. It wasn't a good sign. There isn't a great deal between Diogo Dalot and Aaron Wan-Bissaka but it was a surprise to see the former start against Brighton, based purely on how well Wan-Bissaka played against the dangerous Kaoru Mitoma last season.
The Spaniard only started two games for Atletico Madrid last season so is well short of recent football, but he made a bright start for United, helping to win possession high up the pitch with some committed play that earned a roar from the Old Trafford crowd.
