A Man United without Mary Earps looks grim even with a £100,000 price tag, so what are the club options?
Dear Manchester United fans, hold onto your hats - or goalkeeper gloves - as the club recently rebuffed Arsenal’s world record goalkeeper fee of £100,000 for United and Lionesses shot-stopper, Mary Earps.
According to sources, it is the club's priority to keep Earps at Leigh Sports Village, and so it should be. United shambolically failed to muster the go-ahead to keep Russo, Ona Batlle and co. in the summer, and look at how that will hurt them in this Champions League year. So, manager Marc Skinner cannot afford to let their number 27, the FIFA Best Goalkeeper, escape their grasp.
But let’s call a spade a spade, the other keepers need that invaluable experience in the top-flight. Otherwise, how are they to improve? How would they cope and step up if or when Earps decides to leave? Their other goalkeeper, Emily Ramsey, terminated her United contract a year early to make her loan spell at Everton, permanent. A great keeper with huge potential considering the 22-year-old has been called up for England camps by Sarina Wiegman - a catastrophic loss for United’s backup plans. For me, she was primed ready to take the helm at United at the drop of a hat - that system works.
So now, a keeper down, United are in a pickle. Should they send out Baggaley on loan to a Women’s Super League side to get invaluable game time? Or do they keep her on the books, peppering her in between the sticks throughout the season, resting Earps more often? Of course, this is only cause for concern if Earps decides to up and leave, whether it be this year or next - Baggaley can also leave at the same time, really leaving United royally stuffed.
