The court heard Gurung allegedly made a “persistent approach” towards the woman, who he had never met, in the early hours of January 25 at the Pyrmont Bridge Hotel. Acting Magistrate John Doohan addressed Gurung during the hearing, telling the court "it seems to me the complainant made it clear to you at both venues that she wanted to be left alone" before the assault.
But Gurung did not attend his next court appearance days later and was convicted of the offences in his absence.
