A man who told people he was "adopting" a child days before kidnapping a toddler with whom he had formed an "obsession" will be released after serving less than a year in jail.Judge Orazio Rinaudo told the court his abduction attempt "defies belief"In the District Court in Brisbane on Thursday, Olando Aleki, 31, pleaded guilty to one count each of child stealing and entering a dwelling with intent.
A CCTV camera captured Aleki taking the child from the house, sparking an Amber alert with police quickly becoming concerned the boy was at significant risk. The court heard he had known the child's mother and despite spending "limited time" with the boy between late 2020 and early 2021, he became obsessed with the idea of becoming his parent.
"[Aleki] perceived rightly or wrongly that he could provide that care, care that he hadn't received himself as a child," he said.
