A man named Joel Cauchi, who had a fascination with knives and a potential history of targeting women, has been arrested in Sydney. Cauchi, who recently moved to Sydney and rented a storage unit, was known to police in Queensland but did not have a criminal record. He had listed himself on a website for sex work and had made posts on social media looking for companionship and photography lessons.

“He was weird.… a guy who liked his knives,” said one man who recalled sharpening Cauchi’s knives when he lived in Queensland .Speaking on condition of anonymity to protect his business, the man said he sharpened two eight-inch knives of Cauchi’s.

Police sources not authorised to speak publicly said that Cauchi was known to police in Queensland, but did not have a criminal record.It was unclear on Sunday morning what had drawn him to police’s attention in the past. Cauchi was not known to NSW Police.On Sunday, NSW Police said Cauchi had recently moved to Sydney and had rented a storage unit in the inner city.Police believe Cauchi lived with schizophrenia. They were investigating a potential history of targeting women.
