Man with knives, machete at Oceanside storage center prompts five hour stand-off [Breaking]
A man who had a machete, a small hatchet and two large knives at an Oceanside self-storage center kept police at bay for five hours Friday before surrendering, a police spokeswoman said.
After he was taken into custody, officers took him for a psychiatric evaluation, spokeswoman Jennifer Atenza said. The incident started about 8 a.m. when an employee called police to report that the man was brandishing a knife at the business, on Oceanside Boulevard west of Melrose. Police arrived but the man holed up in a narrow hallway inside one of the storage-unit buildings.
Atenza said arrest teams blocked escape routes from the hallway, and officers — including one from the Psychiatric Emergency Response Team — talked with him.During the stand-off, the man shouted incoherently, and repeatedly put the knife down, then picked it back up, she said. Twice, police fired pepperballs, but he would not give up. Officers continued talking with the 41-year-old until he agreed to surrender, Atenza said.
